Thrifted History

Another favorite skirt find for me. I believe this was from a thrift store in Pittsburgh, PA where I attended college – lasting me quite a couple of years now. One of the reasons I love thrift and vintage clothes is that you get to breathe new life into these unique items. From close inspection of the skirt, I’m assuming it was handmade, which makes it even better for me.  The thought of someone out there getting the idea to make the skirt, finding the material, and putting it all together makes me so happy.

I think my passion for thrift and vintage, aside from the inherent frugality of it, stems from the element of adventure.  You are at the mercy of the merchandise in the store.  Thus, finding a piece that fits you and your style is so much more of an accomplishment than walking into a mall store and coming home with new clothes. Indeed, there is also a bit of history and storytelling with thrift and vintage clothes – where have they been, what decades and events have they witnessed, who has loved them in the past?

I imagine this rant might sound crazy, but since childhood, I’ve always had a strange attachment to inanimate objects. I’ve never had a security blanket and since I’m allergic to animals including the stuffed kind, my attachments were to my clothes. Each time I lost something, a shoe for example, I would imagine it out there in the world lonely and sad, desperate to be reunited with it’s solemate. I’ve been known to assign personalities and feelings to all of my possessions, which makes it hard to part with them. Fortunately for my hubby, we live in a one-bedroom apartment so I am forced to organize and downsize from time to time, thus avoiding a terrifying “hoarders” situation.

Another piece of history: these seemingly plain-old curbstones are more than meets they eye.  They are actually made of lava rock quarried during the late 1800′s – mid 1900′s and are considered historic because of their significance to the roadway infrastructure development of Honolulu.  Although they seem to only stand about 6 inches, most are actually large boulders that go down as much as 5 feet underground. Neat-o huh?

Hope you had fun learning some new facts.  May your weekend be filled with making a little history of your own!

Birds of a Feather

This skirt has got to be one of the most prized articles of clothing that I possess.  I actually made it out of fabric that I bought at a thrift store.  I love the whimsical, ethnic vibe of it all.

I felt feathers in the hair was very apropos to go with a bird skirt so I glued this little pin together a couple of nights ago.  Just purchased the bunch of feathers from a random shop in NYC’s garment district for under $5 and a generic hair clip. Add in a little bit of craft glue and voila!

Lunch for the Ladies and Gents

Last Friday, I attended a luncheon for work in Waikiki. We were nominated for an award, but unfortunately did not win. I did, however, get really excited and busted out my camera to film our dramatic moment (of disappointment).  Regardless, it was a fun afternoon especially playing on the grounds of the beautiful hotel after the meal. One thing that always bewilders me is how cold the AC in indoors spaces are.  Thus, the sweater and tights in the middle of a sunny Hawaii afternoon – and I was still freezing in the ballroom!

As much as locals on Oahu try to avoid Waikiki, I really love getting caught up in the excitement.  Without fail, I am always treated to a fun show of stylish and crazy tourists running amok.  The feeling of eternal recreation doesn’t hurt either.

I bought this necklace a number of years ago at the Aloha Stadium swap meet from a woman who sold costume jewelry.  I wish she was still around because she had an amazing selection that I would go gaga over now.

Dawn of a New Day

What a beautiful morning!  Isn’t it wonderful when things just seem to fall into place?  I say this now in honor of my dear friend, Dawn Yanagihara, the artist of this amazing illustration.  Since I’ve known her, kindergarten to be exact, she’s always been one of the most creative and unique people I’ve ever and probably will ever meet.  Case in point, we play a game where friends come up with 5 disconnected and frequently lewd words that in 10 minutes Dawn will transform into a witty (and catchy) ditty.  But, before music, she had her illustrations: she’s been sketching ever since I can remember.

After finishing college at a distinguished university and spending some time abroad and in the corporate world, Dawn decided to attend design school.  A move, I can’t applaud her enough for.  It just feels so right for her to be in this new world.  She just completed a website featuring her keen and whimsical take on design:

www.dawnyanagihara.com

Dawn has also been submitting designs on threadless.com, I can’t wait to see what the future in design holds for my friend.

A funny story to go along with my illustration: Dawn had asked me what my favorite animal was.  As a “bubble” child – someone severely allergic to most fur among many other things, I didn’t really have a good answer for her.  So, she asked my hubby what he would characterize me as. Being the jokester that he is, this is what he said: a grindylow. Google image it. So mean! :) But, I am proud of the fact that he referenced a creature found in Harry Potter – my other love. We finally settled on the sparrow after taking a few “if I was an animal what would I be” tests online.

Dawn did inspire me to be creative this weekend and I started jotting down some new designs for my textile pieces.

And finally, I had to add in this cute little stick figure drawing from my little sister. She writes me silly notes when she is bored in class (high school) and actually mails them to me, which I find really exciting in this day and text-crazy age.  It just makes me smile.

Happy Monday!

Flights of Fancy

Happy Weekend all!  I’ll leave you with some dream-worthy shots from my favorite Hawaii photographer, Christie Pham, of her personal travels.  I just love peeking at her blog from time to time to see her view of life.  These were taken on her recent vacation to Spain.

Why don’t people in Hawaii dress like this?  (Well, besides the obvious tropical climate issue).

I’m off to a luncheon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  Which was, incidentally, the first hotel Elvis stayed at upon his inaugural arrival to Hawaii – later one of his favorites.  Aren’t tidbits about dreamy historical celebrities fun?!
