On the Sunny Side of the Street

Playing around in the afternoon sun behind my apartment building – nothing too special about that. However, it is interesting to note that my apartment in urban Honolulu is next to the Capitol District which is chock-full of chilling Hawaiian folklore.  Just looking at the happy innocuous street, you would never suspect that it is home to one of the most notable ghost stories of local legend.

They say that this very street behind me is the walking path of ancient Hawaiian warrior ghosts called Night Marchers. Loud drumming and lit torches announce the arrival of the marchers.  It is said that you should never look into the eyes of the Night Marchers, or they will make you one of them for eternity.  You can be saved, however, if you have an ancestor among their group.  Legend says that if you should ever cross their path, lie face down on your stomach, avoiding eye-contact and any movement until they pass.

Fun little story for summer campfires huh?

Rollin’ with the homies

This past weekend was oh so much fun.  I took yesterday off so with Friday’s holiday combined, I’ve been loving the good life for 4 whole days straight. On Saturday, I ventured to a pacific roller derby bout with the hubby and friends.  And I must say, there is nothing better than lounging in the afternoon sun, cold brews in hand and watching hardcore girls knocking each other down.  It is a vicious sport, but you can’t help but feel empowered as you watch.  The crazy nicknames and outfits of the players increase the entertainment value as well.

Ensemble – wise, there is really nothing special since it’s so hot and sitting on the ground limits you to shorts. I did however, get into the summer spirit by picking up some crazy bright shorts and new sporty mary-janes.

I ordered these creative recreation shoes last week from endless.com and they came in 2-days with free shipping.  I was looking for a new biking shoe, but they are so comfy I might just have to wear them all the time.

Happy Holiday

Today is King Kamehameha Day and it is also a holiday for me.  It’s almost 9:30am Hawaii time and I am still lounging in bed.  I love random local holidays!  So far this morning, I’ve read through my daily style blog roll, watched Singing In the Rain on DVD and planned out my crafting for this weekend.  Next up will be a run around the beach park and a swim in the ocean. I am hoping the rest of the long weekend progresses in much the same way.  Here’s to hoping!

A Treasured Past

Don’t you love my new vintage Coach purses?  I am thrilled to inherit them from my mother-in-law, who was cleaning out her closets over the weekend for a complete house renovation.  It was fortunate that she was a purse-addict and somewhat of a pack rat so these beauties stayed in good shape over the decades.  Can’t wait to use them out and about town this summer!

In other news, due to a weekend spent outdoors and a overzealous mosquito, I might not be able to write current ensemble posts just yet.  I’ll simply have to think of new ways to entertain my crafting and styling for now.  Until then, cheerio!

Under The Sea

We had the fortunate opportunity to tour the USS Bowfin submarine over the weekend. It was a dear friend’s parents’ 40th anniversary and what a great celebration it was! The evening started with champagne and appetizers at sunset, then a walk through the gallery, followed by a tour on the submarine itself and finally dinner in the warm summer air.

A little background on the USS Bowfin: As a fleet attack submarine, she was launched on December 7th 1942, exactly one year after the famous attack on Pearl Harbor.  I always feel a little unsettled when the topic of Pearl Harbor comes into play. As a Japanese – American, I am unequivocally American. However, I have difficultly with some events in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor. My grandfather, for example, spent much of his childhood in a internment camp with his parents losing most of their investments and belongings.

While I don’t know how I feel about such boastful messaging , I can appreciate our strong nation’s media and advertising prowess. On a lighter note, I love the vintage design of the posters and the antique typewriter in the sub’s living quarters.
