Help Style This: 60′s dress

My sad little blog, I know I have been so neglectful.  Here’s a new little feature that just came about since my mind’s been too cluttered and I haven’t had time to be creative in my style.  It’s all been boring work clothes for me…  So the feature is: Help Style This.  And the item is this awesome vintage 60′s shift dress.  I bought it from Nicole at miSh mAsH a couple of months ago and haven’t figure out what to wear with it or how to alter it.  It’s so in-your-face 60′s that it just seems too literal.  I keep seeing cat eye-liner, white leggings and patent leather Go Go boots. HELP!

So, what are your suggestions to update it?  It can be alterations (I was toying with the idea of taking up the sleeves a bit), add ons or just what to wear it with.  Leave your suggestions as comments below!  THANK YOU!

Love in the afternoon

This week has been so crazy for me. With an insane (and frustrating!) project schedule at work, dinners, volunteering and of course the fall TV show premieres, I have been a little neglectful of blog updates. But, it’s Friday and I figure what a perfect time to ignore everything else I have going on and just play with pretty photos?

Here are photos of the bouquet a friend and I helped to make for a coworker’s wedding. I don’t even remember all of the blossoms we used, but these here were my favorites – chrysanthemums.

Aerial view of our schmorgesborg of flowers with our central theme of peacock feathers right in the middle.

Tadaaa! The finished bridal bouquet.

The lovely maid of honor’s bouquet.

We had left over flowers, so I just put together really simple boutonnieres while we were packing up.

And that’s it! Who knew an afternoon spent making floral bouquets would be so much fun? I’ve heard from my coworker that her wedding was perfect and I am so happy for her. Here’s to love (and Fridays)!

Craft: Peacock Paradise

Another Pebbles&Thread creation. This one is actually a little smaller than the others, easily an everyday wear kind of piece, but was intended for a wedding. The bride is a friend with red hair and I can’t wait to see how these colors contrasted with her gorgeous locks! Spent Friday afternoon making her wedding bouquets. More photos to come later.

materials: chiffon, silk, peacock feathers, brass medallion embellished with seed beads.

Holy Moly Macaroni

Everyone seems to be talking about the changing season – days getting shorter and the weather cooling off, but in Hawaii nothing seems to be changing much. In fact, I would venture to say it’s been hotter recently than during the peak of summer. Regardless, I try to get into the season-changing spirit. Yesterday, I was buying a vintage coat that I probably can’t wear unless I’m traveling and today it’s putting on a pair of socks.

Carpooling home from work, Mark and I drove through a very industrial, slightly scary part of Honolulu. Although among the various dilapidated buildings, you can find a diamond in the rough – a fun sign, an old store front. Like this Modern Macaroni Co., which I have never heard of. As far as I know, all macaroni in Hawaii comes in a box at the grocery store or in fancy packages at Whole Foods. But, maybe this tiny little factory has been turning out delicious noodles this whole time! The air did smell of flour and gluten.

This is the belt that Trina was wearing on our shopping adventure to the popCLOTH sale. I ended up buying it because I loved the buckle and cheery yellow color.

dress – GAP
belt – popCLOTH
clock necklace – thrifted
socks – nine west
oxfords – thrifted Charles Jourdan

Shop til you pop(CLOTH that is)!

Another popCLOTH shopping adventure with Trina!  Again, we found great pieces from the $10 rack, including T’s skirt that we think reminds us a little of Super Mario. So cute and so perfect over the striped dress she was already wearing. Remember, popCLOTH moved to the second Monday of every month at the Honolulu Design Center.

And I found a fun little vintage coat that reminded me of Where’s Waldo with the red and white striped tie. It looks rather comical when it’s all buttoned up because the tie is ridiculously large and goofy looking. But, as an opened coat, it’s rather school-girl charming. I think I will change out the buttons to something ceramic and gold with possible nautical influences. The sleeves also need to be shortened just a bit.

And as always, we found awesome dresses that were fun to try on, but eventually went back on the rack. Her island-inspired mini had too much essence-of-local-fight-attendant, while mine was just not right. I actually loved the lace sleeve detail though, so I am scheming a way to add it to another garment of mine.

And that’s it for our after work shopping. We threw in some cocktails to make for a perfect pau hana.

Micah, the owner of CLOTH said that next month will be major. She’s bringing in a bunch of new merchandise and costume items. She’s also taking special orders for costumes, so check out her website for contact information and have a happy day!
